Religious Affiliation: I have had training and experience in working with people of many different religious faiths, spiritual orientations and backgrounds, as well as, individuals who identify as agnostic or atheist.
Clinical Specialties: [Individuals, Couples, & Families – Adults and Adolescents] Expatriate and repatriate challenges (including culture shock, reverse culture shock, adjustment and short/long term goals); international student adjustment; TCK, feelings of dislocation; isolation; discrimination; life transitions; bereavement (including traumatic/sudden loss); relationship issues; divorce; family conflict; estrangement from family of origin; trauma; PTSD; victims of sexual abuse; person’s struggling to reconcile moral injury from combat; workplace &/or school or academic stressors; depression; anxiety; adult effects of neurodiversity (including: dyslexia, dyspraxia, and Asperger’s Syndrome); support for carers; career planning; identity; and personal development.
Cross-Cultural Experience: I worked with immigrants and refugees in Miami, prior to actualizing my own desire to live and work overseas. I taught academic English at a Japanese university whilst providing phone counseling to both foreign expats and Japanese repatriates on Tokyo English Life Line. I later extended my cross-cultural experience including having spent time in India and having lived and worked in Northern Iraq and in London, United Kingdom where I trained more extensively in the field of counseling and held clinical placements at a bereavement service, a hospice, a specialist Asperger’s Syndrome Service and an NHS hospital, as well as having been a phone counselor with a national mental health hotline and a support worker with victims and witnesses of crimes. I have provided counseling/psychotherapy to clients from over 19 different countries across a range of ages, socio-economic backgrounds, ethnicities, languages of origin, and religious/spiritual orientations. My having spent over a decade of my adult life living, working and providing counseling in foreign countries affords me a unique world perspective, which I feel extends beyond what can be taught from within one’s country of origin alone. I apply a person-centered and existential lens to my approach to therapy in which I seek to understand the client’s world view from their shoes, without assumption or stereotype, but rather through unpacking meaning with the client and meeting them where they are. I believe that human suffering is a normal part of life, rather than a deficiency or pathology, and I value and honor difference. When one challenges themselves outside of their comfort zone or place of origin, I think it is only natural that they will face periods of unease. In confronting this unease, I feel there is an opportunity to learn about oneself and to grow and evolve. I find working with people facing inter-cultural issues to be phenomenally rewarding and I feel honored to be a part of that process with clients.
