It doesn’t take much to set off the alarm inside. A tone shifts, a text goes unanswered, you sense disappointment in someone you love. And almost instantly, a story rushes in: I’m not enough. I’m too much. I don’t matter.
Then comes the surge. Anxiety, frustration, anger, maybe going numb. You try to manage it by overthinking, pushing for reassurance, defending, people-pleasing, or shutting down. On the outside, that’s what people see. Inside, it might be something much more tender: I’m hurt. I’m scared. I feel alone. I don’t feel worthy.
These patterns live within us. They follow us into our relationships, into how we parent, how we respond to a partner, and how safe we feel with other people.
But these patterns are not fixed. The reactions that feel automatic can begin to soften. The emotions you’ve spent years avoiding can become something you understand and know how to move through. Relationships that feel stuck can become places of safety and connection again. There is a way out of these cycles, and you don’t have to figure it out alone.
This is the work I specialize in.
I’m Sarah Herring, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in attachment, relationships, and Emotionally Focused Therapy. I work with couples and families using EFT to understand and transform the cycles that keep them disconnected. In my work with individuals, I use Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy (EFIT), and I’m certified in EFIT.
Whether I’m sitting with one person, a couple, or a family, we’re working toward something similar: understanding what happens underneath the reactions that keep you stuck, creating greater emotional safety, and developing new ways of relating to yourself and the people who matter to you.
Together, we slow the cycle down, get curious about your triggers and the meanings you make of them, and create enough safety—in the room and within yourself—to approach feelings that may have felt too much before.
From that place, compassion grows. Choice grows. New ways of being with yourself and with the people you love become possible.
Over time, you don’t just learn to manage your reactions. You can begin to feel more at home in yourself and more connected in your relationships. That’s what this work can make possible.
