Hello there, name is Joseph, and I’m a UK, BACP-registered counsellor and psychotherapist, with a background in special education and more than 18 years of experience working with children, young people, adults and families.
My work has taken me from London to Beijing, Bangkok, Dhaka and Lebanon. Along the way, I’ve had the privilege of sitting with people from very different cultures, families and walks of life. And if there’s one thing all those places have taught me, it’s that underneath the different languages, passports and stories, people are often wrestling with remarkably similar things: how to feel understood, how to make sense of what has happened to us, how to love and be loved, and how to find our way when life doesn’t quite look the way we expected.
My studies and experience have given me particular insight into childhood, adolescence and family life, as well as the emotional and psychological difficulties that adults can experience. I work with individuals, couples, children and families, and support people through concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma, self-esteem, attachment styles, relationships, grief, life transitions and the particular challenges that can come with living away from home.
I believe therapy begins with something quite simple: being able to sit down with another person and feel that you don’t have to pretend.
There is no perfect way to arrive at therapy. Sometimes you know exactly what is wrong. Sometimes you simply know that something isn’t right. And sometimes you’ve been carrying something for so long that you’ve forgotten what life feels like without it.
My approach is person-centred, compassionate and trauma-informed. I don’t see myself as someone who has all the answers, or as an expert who is going to tell you how to live your life. My role is to listen carefully, ask the right questions, and help you explore what is happening beneath the surface — at a pace that feels right for you.
I also bring many years of experience working within international schools and multicultural communities. I understand that being an expatriate, a parent, an adolescent growing up between cultures, or simply someone trying to find their place in an unfamiliar world can bring its own particular pressures. Sometimes home is one country, work is another, family is somewhere else entirely, and you’re expected to somehow keep all the pieces together.
Today, I work from Bangkok, offering English-speaking counselling and psychotherapy both in person and online for adults, couples, families, expatriates and international residents.
And perhaps the best way I can describe what I hope therapy can become is through the words attributed to the poet Rumi:
“Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.”
For me, that field is the space between judgement and understanding — a place where we can slow down, put the armour aside for a while, and simply be human.
If you’re struggling with something, you don’t necessarily need to have it all figured out before you come. We can start exactly where you are…Give me a call now…
